There was once a demon named Neuro who's source of food was brains, but liked to eat mysteries instead. One day he devoured all of the mysteries that were in the demon world. Despite doing this, he was not full. This was because the mysteries there were so small, that he was the only one to eat all of them. When he was looking for a place to go where he could fulfill his craving for the ultimate mystery, he set his sight on earth.

On earth, Yako Katsuragi's father was brutally murdered in a locked room. The police labeled it a suicide. After the funeral, Neuro appeared to the grieving Yako in the most happiest, although slightly creepy way, way possible, he put a smile on everything up on his arrival! He had finally thought he had found the ultimate mystery with the death of her father.

Since Neuro really couldn't reveal what he was to people, he decided to use Yako as a front. He would make her reveal the criminals, while he adopted a slightly fake personality and pretended to be in the background as her assistant. Long story short, this was not the mystery he was looking for. It barely even filled him up. So he disappeared, needless to say Yako was shocked that he just up and left like that. She also thought her experience with him was over. But it was not over, but it was just beginning. The next morning when Yako woke up however, he reappeared stuck his head into her window.

A couple mysteries later, Neuro thought it was a good idea to get an office, that way the mysteries would come to him. The location he chose was none other then a room in a shady office building already occupied by a collection group from the mob called Saltome Financial. Neuro made a deal that if his teacher, the up and coming high school detective Yako Katsuragi was able to solve their bosses murder, they'd get the office. And just to be fair if 'she' couldn't solve it, she would become their slave in anyway they wanted. And so the deal was set in motion.

After Neuro solved and ate the mystery, the office was theirs. This would be also were he would gain another slave. Godai Shinobu, one of the collectors, that depending on what you go by either lives in the office and does odd jobs thanks to his connection to the underworld, or just random odd jobs and doesn't live in the office. And a secretary, a braid that sticks out of the wall and is connected to a dead body that was hidden under the wall paper named Akane-chan.

Later on, due to the fact that there is so little miasma on earth, he slowly starts to loose his demon strength and regenerative powers, he is slowly becoming human. However he can still use 777 Tools of the demon world, a series of odd sometimes parasitic spy/torture tools that usually have special attributes. For instance, Evil Friday has little spider-like eyeballs that are used to spy on people.

True personality wise, he's sadistic For instance, he's usually picking on Yako, calling her different protozoa and bug names everyday, giving her killer noogies, breaking her neck, giving Godai stupid orders, starving Godai, trying to kill both of them, the list goes on. But despite all this, he calls himself a pacifist. When he's posing as a normal human and Yako's assistant, he takes on the opposite of that. He's pretends to be scared of things like guns to make Yako seem tough, acts overly cheerful and delighted, and generally pretends to be nice to his dear sensei whom he learned everything from.
